Woman Charged With Felony After She Didn’t Return VHS Tape For 21 Years
Shocks and pitfalls are part and parcel of life. They come in an unprecedented way to rock their targets. Surreal things crop up on the fore to leave souls baffled. They hover around to nod to the call of time and take one by storm. A former Oklahoma resident named Caron McBride lived her shocking moment when she came across the felony embezzlement charges piling against her since 2000.
Caron was set to apply for her new driver license. She wanted to get her name changed on the document after her marriage in Texas. But the raging COVID-19 times made her follow a long route for that part. She pitched in for having an appointment and emailed the concerned authorities. She received a reply from them. To her astonishment, she got to know that there was some issue with her records in Oklahoma. And, they asked her to call the reference number. Following the advice, she made the call, only to be left in bewilderment.
The number got her to a woman from the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office on the other end. She told her about the felony embezzlement charges against her over a VHS tape. According to the records, she had rented ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ at Movie Place (Norman) in 1999. The charges cropped up against her in 2000 when she did not return the tape. Since then, they had been ruling her records. The concerned business saw the end of the day in 2008. But the charges continued their existence.
Shedding light on her shock on getting that news, she shared, “She told me it was over the VHS tape and I had to make her repeat it because I thought, this is insane. This girl is kidding me, right? She wasn’t kidding.”
Digging deeper in her memory land, she came across the man she had lived with at that time. Taking on that, she said, “I had lived with a young man, this was over 20 years ago. He had two kids, daughters that were 8, 10 or 11 years old, and I’m thinking he went and got it and didn’t take it back or something. I have never watched that show in my entire life, just not my cup of tea.” Adding to that, she said, “Meanwhile, I’m a wanted felon for a VHS tape.”
Brushing aside the charges, she said, “I mean, I didn’t try to deceive anyone over Samantha (Sabrina) the Teenage Witch. I swear.” Not just that, she also figured out why she had been losing her job over the years. Taking on that part, she said, “This is why… because when they ran my criminal background check, all they’re seeing is those two words: felony embezzlement.”
Taking note of her case and the closure of the concerned business, the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office has decided to close the case. They have decided to dismiss it completely after its journey of 21 years. Finally, Caron can take a sigh of relief. Her records and life can now see smooth sailing without the blot of the felony embezzlement charges.
