139-Year-Old Home Moved 7 City Blocks in San Francisco
The earthquake and fire that occurred in 1906, demolished most of the Victorian homes and therefore the handful of homes left now are not knocked down, rather they are picked up and shifted.
The huge age-old home named the Englander House was picked up and put on a hydraulic carrier. The house was moved for six hours to its final destination which was across seven city blocks. While the house was being shifted across the lively streets, a huge crowd gathered to watch the scene untangled.
It took a final price of $400,000 to shift the mansion. The inhabitants came to watch the scene as if a movie shoot had taken place. While shifting something as huge as this mansion, a lot of factors were considered to be taken care of, like removing all the barriers in the way which included street lights, parking meters, and power lines.
Initially, moving Victorian houses was an ordinary thing but it was for the first time in 45 years that such a scene could be sighted in the city. Many trees were required to be cut down to provide a clear path for the house. It was like a great mansion making its way through the busy streets of San Francisco.
Finally located at 635 Street in San Francisco, the Englander house finds its new start of being situated right next to a mortuary. The owner of the house has plans to turn the Victorian home into a multi-unit rental property. This ancient Victorian home which is 75-foot wide has now become a part of the 47-unit apartment complex.
Shifting of something as historic and antique as the 139-year-old Victorian home was a scene that was recorded by the entire crowd on the way. Clippings of people watching the process excitedly went viral. To preserve these age-old beauties, the only way remains to move them entirely rather than to knock them down and never see them again.
People always remain curious to watch something like this in their monotonous lives.
