This Man Built His Own Cathedral Over A Period Of 56 Years For This Heart-Breaking Reason
A former Spanish monk, Justo Gallego Martinez took up a job of building a cathedral all by his own. He was not at all worried about the amount of time it will take him to complete it, which actually turned out be 56 years (yes, that’s right!).
He was committed to the task and had an unwavering attitude. The inspiring thing is here is that he was dedicated to this task even though he had no knowledge of architecture or building.
When you set a vision on something, you get the instant motivation to achieve that. This is what happened with Martinez. He started working on his cathedral in Mejorada del Campo, Spain in 1961. Just give deep thought to this challenge and you will realize how laborious of a task it is! One needs experience for accomplishing this, let alone doing it all alone.
When one dedicates 56 years of one’s life to something, they always expect an outcome that aligns well with their imagination. You dream, decide to work towards it and leave no stone unturned on the path of achieving it. This is what Martinez did and the result of his hard work was incredible including the fact that the locals have named the cathedral as Don Justo’s Cathedral. What’s better than receiving people’s appreciation for a job well done!
Now, we know that a lot of questions arise regarding the reasons behind someone devoting their life to constructing a cathedral.
You will definitely respect and admire him more once you know why he took up this work. This one is a heart-rending story. A few years ago, Martinez was stricken with tuberculosis. In those times when people were not well aware of diseases and how to cure them, it was not easy to convince people around them. This is what happened to Martinez. The Trappist monks he was around all the time were anxious about this whole situation and were constantly in a fear that his disease would spread. After some considerations, he was instructed to leave their order.
One can only imagine how hard it would have been for him. His only hope was to pray to the Virgin Mary to help him in his difficult times. This is when he vowed to build a chapel to show reverence for the Virgin Mary if he was able to endure these times of struggle and pain.
His prayers were answered and he got all well in a matter of time. He had made a promise and it was time he took action on that. He did not think twice before starting this project. It was meant to happen. He started with the basics and continued to grow with time. The piece of land he was building it on was an inheritance from his mother. So, this place was of extreme importance to him. He had to do justice to his dream which he absolutely did!
The design of this cathedral was beautiful in all aspects. The creation is stunning to look at and leaves everyone awestruck with the intricate details in the design. This 131 feet-tall building has hard work written all over it. Martinez made every effort to acquire what he had promised and it shows. This cathedral is proof that only hard work can lead you to your dreams!
