Engineers Invented A Hoverboard Takes Us Back to ‘Back to the Future II’

‘Back to the Future’ had definitely leveled up our hopes for the way we thought about the future. And honestly, it took a bit more time than all of us had anticipated back then. There had been numerous attempts till now, most of which were ultimately unsuccessful. However, we now have the hoverboard in reality. Although there are still some limitations, the upshot is still worth having a look, because it’s an actual working hoverboard.

Still, we are far away from the world we envisioned after watching the movie with several flying cars. However, the invention of a hoverboard is still taking us a step closer to turning the whimsical world into a reality. Jimmy, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Waterloo came up with the idea of creating a hoverboard for his internship project. With the help of the YouTuber ‘the Hacksmith’, who’s himself a Canadian engineer, this mere idea is now an invention that gives more hope for the future.

The Hoverboard is powered by a bunch of spinning magnets. It’d work properly on a surface that is a good metal conductor like steel. The board requires Eddy current to hover on the surface. The spinning magnets, produce circular electrical currents due to the presence of the magnetic field. The circular electrical currents have the rotatory motion which in turn generates magnetic fields of their own and opposes the magnetic field of the spinning magnets. That’s the working idea behind hovering.

The video shows that it catches fire frequently while it’s being tested. But they’ve fine-tuned to solve this issue as well. But as discussed, it needs a steel-like surface which is hard to find, in case, you wondered to use it on a road. Being a prototype, it still does the work and would seem to be more interesting if engineering is one of your things.

If it’s the progress these guys have come up to, we’re surely going to see more advancements in the coming years. For the time being, watching them making such a prototype is itself interesting.
