Couple Transformed Their Boring Garden Into A Tropical Forest
Maybe this couple had already predicted about the COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions following it, since they brought a piece of Thailand back with them to the UK two years ago. Chris Ensell, 32 and his wife, Anneka, 31 had decided to recreate a garden influenced by their blissful vacation in the Southeast Asian country. Following their vacation, the couple started the renovations during the summer of 2019 to create a calming oasis in their backyard in Ackworth.
Chris remembered how their house, that they bought back in 2018 consisted only of a dry boring garden with useless turf that had not been watered for weeks when they first moved in. The 32 year old added that he wasn’t into gardening before getting their hands on this project. He also said that it’s the first house that they lived in, which had a good backyard space since their first home only had a festooned area with space just for some potted plants.
Ensell, who is a photographer, explained how the idea of turning their garden into a tropical oasis came to them. The couple spent some time thinking about ideas for transforming their garden and it was then that they decided that a tropical paradise theme would be perfect for their garden. They settled on this idea since they loved their vacations at destinations like Thailand and Sri Lanka. They had visited Sri Lanka in 2018 for their honeymoon.
A lot of the couple’s inspiration came from a place in Bangkok called Jim Thompsons house. They say that it was so blissful and calming that they wanted to recreate it in their garden so that every time they stepped into it, it felt as if they’re on a holiday. He added that the plants of their tropical garden are easier to look after in the summer as he only needs to water them in the mornings and evenings. On the other hand, in winters they have to put the plants in their greenhouse with heaters in order to keep them alive.
The transformation of the garden wasn’t an easy process and took the British couple a lot of research on tropical plants so that they could properly care for them. The couple feels that it would’ve been pointless to spend money on all these tropical plants if they didn’t know how to take care of them. Chris explained how he learned to look after the plants through YouTube videos and gardening programs on the television. The almost expertise couple currently contains 300 plant variations which can be estimated to be worth £4,000.
The pair has to shop at specific growers or attend rare plant fairs in order to get as many rare plants as possible. The man added that it sometimes becomes challenging as these plants grow very fast and it’s hard to figure it where to place them so that they get proper sunlight. The whole project has costed Chris and Anneka around $1,500, with some help from some of their family members which has helped in lowering the price of the renovation. The couple tried to work on a predefined budget and focused on buying the cheapest available equipment and sometimes, even bought free products from Facebook Marketplace.
The duo is happy that they chose the tropical theme for their garden, especially during the pandemic when they cannot go out on a vacation.
